The nomination period for the 2023 Bencher Election is now closed.
Lawyers with active status are invited to complete their candidate nomination form in the Lawyer Portal.
To submit your nomination, follow these steps:
Nominations (including endorsements by your nominators) must be complete by 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 17 to be eligible for the election. Please note that the final voter roll will be created on Oct. 24 and only lawyers who have active status as of 8 a.m. that day are eligible to vote starting Nov. 14.
Once your nomination has been reviewed against the criteria provided in the Legal Profession Act and the Rules of the Law Society of Alberta, you will receive an email from election@lawsociety.ab.ca confirming your candidacy.
For more information on the Bencher Election, including the governing rules and becoming a candidate and voting, visit the Bencher Election website.
As part of the Bencher Election process for 2023, the Law Society has developed a Nomination Guide to help prospective candidates better understand the nomination process and their responsibilities and obligations as a candidate. The Guide is meant to supplement the information available on the Bencher Election website and we encourage candidates to review both in detail to assist with their nomination process.
The Guide includes a checklist of the requirements for submission, the election timeline, detailed descriptions of candidate and nominator eligibility, the nomination process, information on district representation and and example candidate statement, CV and photo.
