Kelsey Meyer

Bennett Jones LLP, Calgary

Call: 2003

Kelsey Meyer views this as a critical time in ensuring public confidence in the profession of law in Alberta. Kelsey aims to apply thoughtful and open-minded communication and decision-making skills to ensuring access to justice in our new environment of virtual court hearings, electronic filings, and unprecedented challenges to the Alberta economy. She recognizes and appreciates the need for diversity within the legal profession. The legal profession must help lead these shifts—and be seen as a leader—to maintain the trust of the public and legislators in our self-regulated profession.

Kelsey has almost 20 years of experience advising clients in complex commercial litigation, insolvency and restructuring, and administrative law matters as a partner at Bennett Jones LLP in Calgary. She has been recognized in the Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory as a Leading Lawyer to Watch – Insolvency and Financial Restructuring – Insolvency Litigation, and in the Lexpert Guide to the Leading U.S. / Canada Cross-border Litigation Lawyers in Canada as a Litigation Lawyer to Watch. She has a proven track record of hard work and dedication to her clients, colleagues and community. She would bring this same discipline to the role of a Bencher.

Kelsey is the volunteer coordinator of the Alberta Lawyers’ Assistance Society’s New Parents Practicing Law program in Calgary. She serves as the secretary on her son’s school and parent councils. She has served on the board of directors of Champions Career Centre, which assists people with disabilities in finding employment. At Bennett Jones, she has acted as a principal to seven articling students, and as a mentor to many junior lawyers. She regularly speaks at legal conferences and seminars and has authored numerous articles on insolvency, property tax, and energy law.

Kelsey’s leadership style is hands on, and built on her commitment to becoming an expert in her practice. She leads by example, encouraging those she works with to learn and grow as a result, and never shying away from immersing herself in the details of complex legal issues or proceedings, to ensure she has the thorough and deep understanding necessary to do the best possible job for her clients. She seeks the input of her team members, is diplomatic, and is decisive. Her clients and colleagues appreciate her as dedicated, incredibly hard-working and a valued collaborative and collegial team member. Kelsey’s colleagues appreciate her fierce commitment to what is right, and her devotion to building and maintaining a positive culture of collegiality, mentorship, and support.

Kelsey was born and raised in Lethbridge. She received her BASc (with distinction) from the University of Lethbridge in 1999 and her LLB from the University of Victoria in 2002. She began her legal career as an articling student at Bennett Jones LLP in 2002. Kelsey and her husband enjoy spending time with their five-year-old son.
