Gowling WLG (Canada) LLP, Calgary
I was very excited to join the Bencher table in September of 2018 and am eager to continue to serve our profession.
In November 2018, I was elected by the Benchers to the Executive Committee for the following term. In 2019 I served as vice-chair of the Policy Committee. The Benchers re-elected me to the Executive Committee for 2020 and I am currently the chair of the Audit and Finance Committee and the new Lawyer Competence Committee.
I have been able to bring significant Law Society and law firm practice management experience to the Bencher table. Over the past 25 years, before becoming a Bencher, I was a member of the following Law Society Committees: Professional Responsibility (1993-95); Conduct (1996-99); Insurance (2000-02); Professional Responsibility (2003-05); Credentials and Education (2006-09); Re-Engagement & Retention Task Force (2010-12); and Audit (2014-17).
I acted as the office managing partner of Gowling WLG’s Calgary office (comprised of roughly 100 professionals) from 2007 to 2015. During that period I was also a member of the national management committee charged with oversight of a law firm comprised of over 700 professionals. My management responsibilities exposed me to a surprisingly diverse range of practice management, ethical and personnel issues, including managing change agendas affecting a complement that is largely conservative, skeptical, critical and both change and risk averse.
For the past 35 years my practice has been with only one firm, as an advocate engaged in dispute resolution. Outside of practice, I served as a member of the Board of CUPS (Calgary Urban Project Society) from 2010-17.
My wife and I are fortunate to spend considerable time in Waterton Lakes National Park where we hike, golf, kayak, cycle, stargaze and enjoy leisurely long walks with our dog.
