Statement

Walter is a Partner with MLT Aikins LLP and practices out of their Edmonton office. He was called to the bar in 1986 and is a graduate of the University of Alberta. Prior to attending law school, Walter obtained a Bachelor of Commerce degree from the University of Alberta and worked as a management consultant to both small and large businesses. Walter practices all aspects of Labour Employment and Administrative law including wrongful dismissal actions, grievance arbitration, and Labour Relation Board appearances.

Walter is currently a Bencher and has been involved in numerous Law Society committees both as Bencher and as a volunteer committee member. He is currently the Chair of the Conduct Committee, a member of the Nominating Committee, as well as a member of the Equity Diversity and Inclusion Committee. He has served as a member of the Credentials and Education Committee, Practice Review Committee, as well as the Audit and Finance Committee. As a Bencher, Walter has participated in a number of disciplinary and resignation hearings. Walter’s demonstrated commitment  to  the Law Society has resulted in him having an understanding and appreciation of both the role and the  functioning of the Law Society.

Walter also has extensive leadership experience in the profession having served as the President of the Canadian Bar, Alberta Branch, President of the Edmonton Bar Association, as well as being Chair of numerous Canadian Bar Association Committees and Sections. He has also served as a Committee member of the Federal Judicial Appointment Advisory Committee, and Provincial Court Advisory Committee. He is presently a Board Member of the Legal Education Society of Alberta and a member of their Strategic Initiatives Committee. His volunteer commitments also extend beyond the legal profession. He has served as Chair of the Boyle Street Co-op Community Services, Director of the Canadian Hostelling Association and as Chair of a Habitat for Humanity Build. He is actively involved in fundraising for theatre and arts groups.

In his spare time Walter is an avid road cyclist, mountain biker, backcountry skier, reader and political observer.

Walter wants to continue contributing to the ongoing development and implementation of the Law Society’s 2020/2024 Strategic Plan. That plan focuses on four key areas, Innovative and Proactive Regulation, Competence and Wellness, Access and Equity Diversity and Inclusion. Walter is passionate about these initiatives and looks forward to opportunities to continue to make meaningful contributions to each of them. Walter is in a position to provide the Law Society of Alberta with continuity at the Bencher’s table that will assist in achieving the initiatives of the 2020/2024 Strategic Plan.
