It is obvious that the world has changed in the last five years. The Rule of Law seems suddenly vulnerable. The independence of the profession is increasingly at risk, and the Courts south of the border are subject to attack.
All of us as lawyers have important roles to play in protecting the Courts, the Rule of Law, and the independence of the profession. I have served as a Bencher for three years, and for the last of those years on the Executive Committee. I have worked hard to support the profession and to help it continue to improve and strengthen. I want to continue to do that.
I have been a lawyer for over 30 years, all of them at Blake, Cassels & Graydon LLP. I have served at various times as Head of the Litigation Group, a member of the National Executive Committee, a member of the Compensation Committee, and Co-Chair of the Equity and Diversity Committee. I have a broad and extensive litigation practice and have worked hard to be good at what I do. A long history in the profession has also given me an opportunity to meet and develop relationships with a large number of lawyers, many of whom have been opposite me in matters.
Outside of my Bencher role, I have also tried to make contributions to the administration of justice. I have been heavily involved with The Advocates’ Society (TAS), serving for four years on its National Board of Directors, and as Chair of the National Standing Committee of the Board which focused on expanding TAS across the country. I have also been active in the Alberta Committee of TAS since its inception. I have volunteered for 30 years with Calgary Legal Guidance (CLG). I am currently the Chair of the Board of CLG. The CLG experience shines a light on how important access to justice is. The intersection of experiences as a Bencher and with TAS has given me a unique ability to both do what Benchers do, which is work out of the limelight to address issues effectively, while at the same time being able to be part of public advocacy through TAS to address things affecting the administration of justice.
I also have a long track record of community leadership. I have served as Chair of the Board of a French public school, Vice President of a soccer association, Chair of the Board of the World High School Debating Championships Association, Chair of the Calgary Stampede Youth Speech & Debate Committee, and on numerous Boards and Committees. I have coached 35 soccer teams and two junior high debate clubs. I understand both how to work hard and how to work together to achieve success.
As a Bencher I will continue to work hard, work thoughtfully, and work collegially. I would welcome the opportunity to continue to serve in this important role.
