Statement

I am seeking election as a Bencher of the Law Society of Alberta being in my 40th year of practice in family law and civil litigation. Throughout my career I have had the privilege of appearing before all levels of Court in Alberta, contributing to the development of the law through 92 reported decisions, mentoring students at law, advising junior and senior lawyers and serve, as I continue to do, as a child support resolution officer. These experiences have given me a broad perspective on the practice of law, the administration of justice, and the responsibilities that come with membership in a self-regulating profession.

They have reinforced my belief that the Law Society must remain committed to its fundamental mandate of protecting the public interest while promoting a competent, ethical, and independent legal profession.

I believe that effective regulation requires experience, sound judgment, fairness, and an appreciation of the practical challenges faced by lawyers and the people they serve. It also requires the ability to listen carefully, consider differing perspectives, and make difficult decisions objectively and in accordance with the public interest.

My work in family law and civil litigation has provided me with sustained exposure to the human and legal issues that bring people into contact with the justice system. My experience as a child support resolution officer has further reinforced the value of practical, principled approaches to resolving disputes. Mentoring students-at-law has also allowed me to contribute to the development of the next generation of lawyers and to appreciate the importance of professional guidance, competence, and ethical responsibility.

I would bring to the role of Bencher the perspective of a practitioner with substantial experience in Alberta’s courts, a longstanding commitment to the profession, and a respect for the important responsibilities entrusted to the Law Society. I would approach the role with independence, diligence, and an open mind, recognizing that the protection of the public interest must remain paramount.

I would be honoured to contribute my experience and judgment to the governance of the Law Society of Alberta and to the continued strength, integrity, and public confidence of our profession.
