Statement

I have always believed that being a lawyer is about more than the work we do for our clients. For more than 20 years, I have practised law in Alberta while actively serving the profession at the provincial and national levels. I am seeking election as a Bencher to bring that experience, together with a practical and collaborative approach, to the governance of the Law Society of Alberta.

My practice is focused on real estate, corporate and commercial law. Alongside my practice at BLG, I have had the privilege of serving the profession in a number of leadership roles, most recently as National President of the Canadian Bar Association and, before that, as President of the CBA Alberta Branch. These experiences taught me the importance of listening, asking the right questions, respecting different perspectives and making thoughtful decisions in the best interests of the organizations I served.

My experience with the Law Society of Alberta has given me another important perspective. I served on the Conduct Committee from 2024 to 2026 and continue to volunteer with the AdvisorLink program, providing confidential guidance and acting as a sounding board for practitioners across the province. I have also contributed to the justice system through initiatives involving law reform, judicial appointments, Indigenous and restorative justice, and the advancement of women in the legal profession. Together, these experiences have given me a practical understanding of the challenges facing lawyers and the importance of fair, thoughtful regulation.

My experience has also given me a strong appreciation for the Law Society’s role as an independent regulator and its responsibility to protect the public interest. As the legal profession evolves, regulation must evolve with it. I believe good regulation should be practical, fair and proportionate. My time as CBA National President also reinforced the importance of the rule of law and the independence of the legal profession and judiciary, principles that must remain central to the Law Society’s work in the public interest.

Those who have worked with me know that I am pragmatic, collaborative and decisive. I bring people together, consider different points of view and look for practical ways forward. I believe good leadership requires sound judgment and a willingness to make difficult decisions when circumstances require it. I would be honoured to bring my experience, energy and perspective to the Bencher table and to continue serving a profession that has meant so much to me.
