Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, Calgary

Call: 2009

Statement

I am seeking your vote for Bencher as a prosecutor with a passion for mentorship and mental health in the legal profession. I began my career as criminal defence counsel in Edmonton and now serve as Chief Crown Prosecutor of Regional South with the Alberta Crown Prosecution Service, overseeing our Hinton, Wetaskiwin, Red Deer, Calgary Rural & Regional Response, Lethbridge, and Medicine Hat offices. My work has given me a practical understanding of the realities facing lawyers in urban, regional, and public service settings and has led me to collaborate with organizations across legal, academic and mental health communities.

Beyond leadership in prosecutions, I have been a surrogate principal to articling students and contributed to mentorship programs through the Law Society of Alberta and the Federation of Asian Canadian Lawyers. I have taught at the University of Calgary’s Trial Advocacy course and presented in educational programs offered by the Criminal Defence Lawyers Association and The Advocates’ Society. I am also a contractor with CPLED PREP in a variety of roles, including foundation module content review and exam design for internationally educated NCA candidates. I sit on The Advocates’ Society’s Alberta Advisory Board and the University of Calgary’s Conjoint Faculties Research Ethics Board.

To promote mental health, I serve as a Peer Supporter and Board Director with the Lawyers’ Assistance Program. I have delivered The Working Mind training program to various ministries within the Government of Alberta through the Mental Health Commission of Canada. I was interviewed as a guest speaker for the Wayfound Mental Health Group as part of their Before Operational Stress for Legal Professionals course. Last year, I presented on Mental Health and Prosecutorial Resilience at the International Association of Prosecutors Annual Conference in Singapore.

My record across prosecution, governance, education, mentorship, and mental health initiatives reflects careful listening, a willingness to ask difficult questions, and a continuing commitment to act in the public interest. I would be honoured to have your support to bring a government and criminal lawyer perspective to the Board.
