Call: 1990
I was called to the Alberta Bar in 1990 and have practised criminal law for more than 35 years. I am senior counsel at Davidson Gregory, a small firm, where I have gained practical experience in legal practice management. I am also a member of the Northwest Territories and Yukon Bars and have appeared in courts in British Columbia, Saskatchewan and Ontario. My practice focuses on search and seizure and Charter rights, work that depends on careful analysis of evidence, procedural fairness and objective decision-making.
I have a long-standing interest in the competence and professional development of lawyers. I have taught the Law Society of Alberta Bar Admission Course and the CLE Society Intensive Advocacy Program, chaired the LESA Impaired Driving Seminar, and presented to LESA, the Criminal Trial Lawyers Association, the Canadian Bar Association and the Calgary Defence Lawyers Association, most recently on cybercrime and artificial intelligence.
I served as President of the Criminal Trial Lawyers Association and for many years on its executive, which gave me experience in board governance, leadership and working effectively with colleagues who hold differing views. I sit on criminal judicial committees of the Court of King’s Bench and the Alberta Court of Justice, and previously served on the Criminal Law Legislative Review Committee of the Canadian Bar Association.
I understand that a Bencher’s role is to exercise independent judgment in the public interest and to approach each issue with an open mind. I welcome the opportunity to bring my experience to that work and to serve the public as a Bencher.
