Song & Howard Law Office, Calgary

Call: 2014

Statement

I am a Calgary lawyer and Managing Lawyer of Song & Howard Law Office. My practice includes corporate and commercial law, oil and gas transactions, civil and commercial litigation, and administrative and constitutional matters.

I obtained my Juris Doctor from the University of Calgary, Master of Laws degrees from New York University and Peking University, and a Bachelor of Laws from Peking University. I also passed the New York State Bar Examination in 1996.

Before practising law in Alberta, I worked in legal and academic settings in China and Hong Kong, including teaching law at Peking University. My professional background has given me experience with different legal systems, legal traditions, and approaches to professional responsibility.

I serve as Executive Director of the Council of Alberta Lawyers. In that role, I helped host the Conference for the Dominion of Canada in Calgary on May 16, 2026. The keynote address was delivered by the Honourable A. Brian Peckford, former Premier of Newfoundland and the last surviving premier who signed the November 1981 Constitutional Accord leading to the patriation of Canada’s Constitution and the Constitution Act, 1982.

My understanding of the legal profession is informed by my experience in private practice, my international background, my Christian faith, and my appreciation of Canada’s constitutional framework and the rule of law.

I value the independence of the legal profession, professional competence, ethical conduct, fairness, freedom of conscience, and respect for differing viewpoints. My experience practising in a smaller law office has also given me an appreciation of the practical responsibilities and financial pressures faced by lawyers and their clients.

I recognize that the Law Society of Alberta has a statutory responsibility to regulate the legal profession in the public interest. I consider careful examination of evidence, respect for the law, openness to differing perspectives, and independent judgment to be important qualities in professional governance.

My legal experience, international perspective, independence of thought, and respect for differing viewpoints would inform my service as a Bencher. I would examine the evidence, listen carefully to competing perspectives, and exercise independent judgment in accordance with the law and the Law Society’s statutory mandate.
